Urban design and landscape architectural services were provided for the small community of Anderson, which had experienced years of economic decline. The City sought to create a one-block demonstration area to showcase concepts developed by the firm and illustrate the potential for revitalizing the entire downtown.

As Project Manager, Michael worked closely with the City of Anderson and Redevelopment Agency staff to design the demonstration block in the southern downtown district. The design balanced a fresh, modern aesthetic with the town’s small-town character, incorporating new street furnishings, concrete pavers, updated lighting, tree grates, trash and recycling containers, railings, and benches.

The demonstration block was well-received and quickly expanded into a two-block project. The new plaza now serves as a vibrant community asset, hosting both small and large gatherings. The streetscape successfully blends modern design with a rural small-town feel, and since its completion, several private property owners have pursued new building projects, contributing to the revitalization of Downtown Anderson.
